How to read the grades — and what moves them.
- Water quality is most often affected by heavy rainfall — run-off carries bacteria from fields and drains onto beaches, so quality can dip for a day or two after a downpour.
- Grades follow the EU Bathing Water Directive: samples are tested for E. coli and intestinal enterococci; "Excellent" is the strictest standard.
- Tides matter as much as water quality — check TIDE before you swim, and satellite passes on NOVA if you're staying for the evening.
